Truck tyre mounting and balancing

Truck tyres are usually mounted twice a year or when you notice wear or a change in performance.

When it’s time to replace truck tyres, many drivers head straight to a service centre—proper mounting and precise wheel balancing are critical for driving safety, vehicle stability, reducing the likelihood of various faults, and ensuring even tyre wear.

The price of mounting and balancing truck tyres varies by vehicle and depends on tyre size. Want a more precise information? Contact the TRELO service team in Vilnius today.

When should truck tyres be mounted/replaced?

A question is when you should arrange truck tyre mounting. You should see a specialist in the following cases:

  • After a puncture;
  • For seasonal changes (e.g., from summer to winter tyres);
  • After purchasing a new set – or at least two new tyres.

This service is most popular during seasonal tyre changes. It’s a great time to check the condition of your tyres, measure tread depth, and, if needed, replace them with new ones that meet standards.

Before mounting truck tyres, they are visually inspected to ensure there are no cuts or cracks. This is especially important when fitting used tyres. As noted, tread depth is also checked. It must meet the required standards. If the tread is found to be insufficient, those tyres can no longer be mounted.

A reminder: in Lithuania, the minimum legal tread depth is 3 mm for winter tyres and 1.6 mm for summer tyres. However, most tyre manufacturers recommend not waiting that long and replacing tyres when summer tread depth is 2-3 mm and winter tread depth is 4-5 mm.

How does the truck tyre mounting process work?

The wheel is removed from the truck, the vehicle is lifted with a special hoist, the tyre is fully deflated, and the fasteners are loosened. The tyres are then replaced if needed, re-inflated, and refitted.

When is truck wheel balancing performed?

What is wheel balancing? Simply put, it’s a process that ensures each wheel runs smoothly and evenly. With properly balanced wheels, the truck should drive smoothly and stably, without vibrations.

When is truck wheel balancing performed?

  • After a wheel hits a larger obstacle;
  • After driving into a deep pothole;
  • If you notice unusual steering-wheel vibration or other irregularities.

Over time, wheel imbalance can lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems than proper truck tyre mounting and wheel balancing. Running imbalanced wheels accelerates wear of suspension components, makes the wheels harder to control, and compromises driving safety. Unbalanced wheels cause steering-wheel and body vibrations that fatigue drivers faster and slow reaction times.

If you’ve just fitted new tyres on your truck, you’ll usually be advised to have them rebalanced after roughly 2,000 km. After fitting new tyres, it’s also recommended to check wheel geometry.

Of course, there are cases when wheel balancing simply isn’t possible. If a tyre is damaged or severely worn, or if there are issues with the rims (e.g., cracks or other damage), wheel balancing will not be performed.
